Kantaro Komiya is a news reporter at Reuters‘ Tokyo bureau. Here’s his latest stories.

Through internships in professional newsrooms, including The Associated Press, Barron’s, Bloomberg and The Japan Times, and studying economics at DePauw University, Kantaro has been passionate about business journalism while interested in the business of journalism.


As a business journalist, Kantaro is currently reporting on economic indicators and fiscal/monetary policy changes in Japan, the world’s third-largest economy. He also aspires to tell stories with voices of various people, using data-driven economics and a solution-oriented mindset.

In the journalism business, Kantaro is concerned about the sustainability of news media, a crucial issue today, to the extent of an existential problem for journalism.

A native of Tokyo, Kantaro spent his early life in Japan until high school graduation. At age 10, he started volunteering at The Yomiuri Shimbun, a national daily with the world’s largest circulation, and continued until he was 17, while also serving as the Editor-in-Chief for his high school newspaper.

In 2016, the Panama Papers exposé reignited his passion for journalism, with a particular interest in international investigation. After briefly enrolling at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies for a term, he majored in economics at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., graduating early in Dec. 2020 (B.A.).
